Osteoblast-derived vesicles are internalised by mesenchymal stem cells

Osteoblast-derived vesicles are internalised by mesenchymal stem cells. – Owen Gareth Davies, Loughborough University/University of Birmingham

Human mesenchymal stem cells derived from the bone marrow (red, actin stained) were cultured in the presence of 200nm extracellular vesicles that had been fluorescently labelled with a membrane-specific dye (green, FM-1-43FX stained). The confocal image depicts a cross section of a single MSC, identifying internalisation of the extracellular vesicles. Ongoing work is seeking to determine the effects of vesicle internalisation on MSC phenotype. The nucleus (blue) was stained using DAPI.
